Statement from the Honourable David McGuinty, Minister of National Defence

June 8, 2026 - Ottawa, Ontario - National Defence / Canadian Armed Forces

This weekend, the Canadian Armed Forces worked together with our Belgian allies to deliver military equipment to Ukraine. Belgium supported this effort by facilitating the transport of equipment from Canadian stocks to Ukraine. Canada regularly provides such deliveries, in coordination with our allies, as part of ongoing support commitments.

Canada extends its sincere gratitude to Belgium for its strong partnership and steadfast support. This close collaboration underscores the value of our shared commitment to Ukraine's security and sovereignty. We look forward to continuing our important work together in support of Ukraine.

Ukraine's fight against Russia's illegal and unprovoked war is also a fight for democracy, freedom, and human rights. Canada remains steadfast in its support for Ukraine as it defends its sovereignty and territorial integrity.

In recent years, and in close coordination with partners including Belgium, Canada has facilitated the delivery of military equipment from existing stocks to strengthen Ukraine's capacity to defend itself. This effort reflects the strength of allied cooperation and our shared commitment to enhance Ukraine's defence with the capabilities it needs to protect its people and critical infrastructure.

Canada will continue to work with international partners to provide timely, effective, and sustained support to Ukraine. We commend the bravery and strength of Ukrainians, and we will continue to stand with Ukraine.
